At BDO, we recognize that the success of our firm is deeply intertwined with the well-being of our people and the communities we serve. Mental health plays an especially pivotal role in shaping both our personal and professional experiences. That's why we prioritize mental health awareness and education as key elements in fostering a culture of support and empathy, ensuring everyone feels valued and empowered to thrive.
Central to our efforts is BDO LIFE, our national wellness and well-being program that provides advocacy and education to empower our professionals to lead a healthy and mindful lifestyle. Through the program, we offer extensive resources for professionals and their families, including 24/7 confidential care and crisis support. Our internal BDO LIFE portal also features live and on-demand webinars on health and wellness topics including depression and anxiety and regularly hosts firmwide challenges that promote positive mental health strategies.
This year, BDO celebrates Mental Health Awareness Month with a special spotlight on the beneficial impact volunteering has on mental health. Called a "helper’s high”, engaging in community service can stimulate feel-good chemicals in our brains called endorphins which can reduce stress and boost overall happiness. In fact, a study by UnitedHealthcare found that 93% of volunteers reported improved mood, 79% experienced lower stress levels, and 88% had increased self-esteem through volunteering activities. Volunteers also often report higher life satisfaction and a greater sense of purpose, contributing to overall well-being.
Together with our cause partner Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA), BDO hosted an internal webinar for our professionals to learn more about how serving others can enhance their own mental well-being. During the webinar, leaders from BDO and BBBSA emphasized the significant mental health benefits of volunteering as a mentor, highlighting its positive impact on the mentor, the mentee, and the community. By offering emotional, social, and academic support, mentorship can profoundly impact youth, providing a lifeline to those feeling isolated or needing guidance, while also enriching mentors' lives through purpose, connection and the satisfaction of contributing to a child’s success.
To encourage open discussions on mental health, we invited our webinar panelists to share the positive effects of volunteerism and mentorship on their mental health. Read on for their insights.
BDO's cause partnership with BBBSA aims to enhance the overall well-being of the children & youth in our communities through the power of mentorship. Collaborating with BBBSA, we create virtual and in-person volunteer opportunities that empower our people to support the next generation through mentorship. Learn more.
