Social Impact Year in Review: How we Helped Our Communities Thrive in 2024

Coming Together to Serve Our Communities

Our Weeks of Service are a time for our offices across the country to simultaneously volunteer in support of the firm’s cause areas: children & youth, education & literacy, human rights and the environment. This year, BDO professionals came together during two Weeks of Service to support local nonprofits and help their communities thrive.

Outside of our Weeks of Service, our professionals volunteer within their communities in a variety of ways. Our BDO Counts coordinators schedule events year-round with local organizations. Additionally, we collaborate with our inclusion group leaders to host service events and fundraisers to support causes they are passionate about.

Virtual Volunteering Opportunities

In addition to Weeks of Service, BDO provides opportunities for professionals to volunteer throughout the year aligned to our four cause areas. Events included:

  • Building Kynd Kits
  • Upcycling household items
  • Creating math worksheets for students
  • Reviewing student LinkedIn profiles to help them standout in their job searches

Our “Introduction to Nonprofit Board Service” webinar provided employees information on serving on nonprofit boards they are passionate about. Over 650 BDO professionals attended this training, gaining insights into the basic responsibilities and commitments of board members to help decide if board service is right for them.

BDO's Commitment to Community

It takes a special company to actively educate, and through the process, recruit employees for giving back to the community. It was a very proud BDO moment to see over 600 people interested in working towards a greater good.

Maximizing Our Impact

BDO amplifies the generosity of our people through Matching Gifts, where professionals can have their eligible charitable contributions matched dollar-for-dollar, and Dollar for Doers, where professionals can convert their volunteer hours into monetary donations for the eligible nonprofit of their choice.

Through these programs, our people contributed nearly $400,000 in charitable donations and impacted more than 1,200 organizations in 2024.

In honor of GivingTuesday, BDO amplified our professionals’ impact by increasing matched contributions to nonprofits they are passionate about. As a result, 360+ organizations received support during this year’s global day of giving.

Charitable Contributions

Our social impact strategy focuses on supporting nonprofits that create meaningful change in the communities we serve.

""Education & Literacy

AICPA Foundation - $25,000 donated to student scholarships

""Children & Youth

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital $25,000 donated to the childhood transition oncology program

""Environment

The Nature Conservancy $25,000 donated to environmental conservation

""Human Rights

Team Rubicon - $25,000 donated to disaster relief and aid nationwide

In the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, BDO made two $10,000 donations, one to Team Rubicon and another to American Red Cross, in support of these nonprofits’ efforts to provide assistance and resources to those impacted by the storms.

The firm also encouraged donations to nonprofits providing disaster relief and matched those charitable contributions dollar-for-dollar, raising thousands for those impacted.

The Art of Giving

For the third year, BDO hosted The Art of Giving: Create for a Cause, Shop with Purpose. This tradition aims to give back to communities while celebrating the firm’s creative professionals. BDO artists created original artwork to donate, and for the first time, the firm opened the marketplace to an external audience to allow for friends, family and clients to bid on artwork.

All of the money raised from this initiative went to projectart, which aligns with BDO’s children & youth and education & literacy cause areas, providing young people with access to art education in cities across the country. As a result of the event, our professionals and the firm donated $15,000 to projectart.

BDO Counts Awards

The BDO Counts Awards celebrate BDO employees who continuously and admirably embrace the firm's Social Impact strategy. These honor individuals and teams who make a positive impact in their community.

In addition, the firm celebrates our most active volunteers through the President’s Volunteer Service Award (over 100 hours) and the BDO Counts Honor Roll (25-99 hours).

Cause Partnership

BDO announced our first national cause partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA), helping to create a pathway to economic empowerment and brighter prospects for the next generation through mentorship. Selected by our professionals through a firmwide vote, BBBSA is the largest mentoring network in the U.S. dedicated to helping youth reach their full potential.

The firm’s relationship with BBBSA marks a significant milestone for our Social Impact strategy and will strengthen its impact within our children & youth cause area.
