Executive Summary
John serves as the Central Region Managing Principal of Tax Services at BDO, overseeing more than 1,300 tax professionals across 30 cities in the central United States. He possesses comprehensive knowledge of corporate taxation, advising businesses of varying sizes and ownership structures, with particular emphasis on the manufacturing, automotive, and consumer products sectors. With over three decades of experience in domestic and international tax planning, John’s work is notably concentrated in the automotive supply chain and, more recently, the automotive mobility and automated vehicles industries.
His broad experience encompasses corporate and partnership taxation, mergers and acquisitions, as well as international and multi-state tax matters. John has been deeply involved in a range of areas including IPO transactions, dividend recapitalizations, research credits, tax accounting methods, and accounting for income taxes. He has skillfully guided clients through complex IRS examinations, implementing strategies designed to defer and minimize tax liabilities.
Elected to BDO’s Board of Directors in 2020, and now serving his second elected term, John contributes valuable insight through his leadership of two board committees, supporting the firm’s continued success. He has also held the position of National Tax Leader for BDO’s Retail & Consumer Products Industry group.
Prior to joining public accounting, John led strategic initiatives in-house at Ford Motor Company’s Office of Tax Counsel, focusing on reducing cash taxes and improving the company’s global effective tax rate, including complex planning to optimize the company’s tax attributes.
John is a published author, with articles featured in Crain’s Detroit Business and Accounting Web and has appeared on the 60-Second Retail podcast. He has also presented on the taxation of mergers and acquisitions at Michigan State University’s MBA program.
